The Fowl Heart, Chapter 5: The Mistaken Identity

The Mistaken Identity     Something was hitting him in the face. He was being hit in the face and he was cold. Why was he so cold?     Xander realized his eyes were still closed, and he very much preferred not to open them. He could remember what happened, but did not understand most of it, and the idea of making sense of it all seemed daunting and made his head hurt more than it did already. And something was still hitting him in the face!     It didn’t exactly hurt him, but was very annoying, like an unwanted poke from a very fuzzy finger of a toddler. He tried waving away whatever was hitting him, but instead whatever it was changed tactics and scratched him!     Xander opened his eyes to find the bright blue eyes of a white cat staring back at him. Its mouth was opening and closing but no sound seemed to accompany the action. He assumed he still could not hear anything, including this cats meowing or the windy evening. As Xander raised h...

The Fowl Heart, Chapter 4: Fight and Flight

The pain was excruciating. Xander’s ears immediately started bleeding from the sound reverberating across the walls. It sounded like the loudest screeching child in the world was having the champion of all tantrums in their home – and the home was losing the battle. Glass was shattering and exploding everywhere, windows, glass jars and cups, the television set, the door to the oven, showering all the Summerbys with jagged shards, cutting their exposed skin. The screams seemed to be unstoppable, and brought each family member immediately to their knees while they plugged their ears in vain. Xander felt a wave of relief as he thought the sound stopped, only to realize in horror he could not hear his own shouting. He was calling out to his mother and brother to check on them, ask them what happened, because it was obviously magic he was unaware of, but could not hear his own voice. He was deaf! He shook the glass off his bleeding hands and felt the vibrations in his own throat as he...

The Fowl Heart, Chapter 3: The Detour

“Side-along Apparition!” exclaimed Gavin, excitedly. “My first time doing it, too!  It was Ministry approved over the summer when the news broke that You-Know-Who was back.  Brilliant, right?” asked Gavin, with the widest smile on his face.  Xander said nothing, but simply nodded his head energetically and while forcing a smile that was a little wider than normal, grabbed his brother in a tight hug to both welcome him home and hide his real jealousy. Although Gavin and Xander were identical twins, there were clear differences to tell them apart.  Xander’s sandy hair was long and wavy, and parted to one side per the Dalton dress code; he was pale from always being inside, and scrawny. Gavin’s hair was cropped very short, he was tanner, and while still thin his muscles were tauter from Quidditch training.  Gavin also had a swagger and confidence about him that reminded Xander more of the school jocks than of himself.  Overall, Xander imagined he probabl...

The Fowl Heart Chapter 2: The School Letter

This is the second chapter in my Harry Potter fan story. Appropriate for all ages, and yes, very nerdy. *many years later* It was almost impossible for Xander to focus on the lecture unfolding in front of him.  The philosophy professor seemed to be droning on monotonously as if there was no passion left in him, which had become quite common.  The only evidence of emotion he showed was during the first week of the semester when he angrily told off three students for raising their hands and distracting him from his next train of thought.  He had promptly proclaimed with an air of indignation that the next student to ask a question and waste his time with “obtuse observations of the naiveadolescent” would be thrown out of his class permanently.  As Philosophy was a required prerequisite for graduating and Professor Lashinsky was the only teacher for the subject, every student quickly realized this would be a very boring class.     The past week had not been a ...

The Fowl Heart

Hi everyone! I've started writing a few stories. Most of them are original stories of my own, but below is the beginning of a fan story I enjoy, which is appropriate for all ages. The Fowl Heart A Harry Potter Fan story by Mikel Nelson July 31, 1945     “We didn’t know who else it could be about until a couple months ago. I tried to let you know sooner, but – well, obviously, you’ve been busy.” said the short witch with long wavy hair.     “It is completely understandable, I assure you,” said the wizard with the crooked nose and half-moon spectacles. “As a matter of fact, I am quite thrilled to be invited to such a magnificent place. There is so much to be in awe of that it peaks the curiosity deliciously.”     “Plus less owls to answer and interviews to be had, if you’re stuck down here I imagine,” said the witch with an admiring grin.     “Naturally.” said the wizard with a courteous nod and a smirk.     “Well here it is. You can retri...
